Summary
After midnight, Ella waits until she is sure her mother is asleep. Guided by Anton’s earlier lessons and determined not to be trapped again, she straightens a paperclip into a makeshift pick and works the closet lock. Doubt nearly derails her, but the lock clicks, and she slips out into the dark, silent, hoarded house.
Fearing discovery and future confinement, Ella booby-traps the staircase. She topples stacks of papers onto every step, then hauls the twin mattresses from the living room to tilt one along the steps and brace the other across the bottom. She piles clothing and boxed food to blockade the stairwell, making descent nearly impossible.
Planning arson to end her captivity, Ella uses the green lighter Anton gave her to ignite a cigarette, then tosses it onto a mound of papers. The tinder-dry clutter erupts quickly. She leaves the lighter behind to avoid being linked to the fire and watches as multiple stacks catch, the blaze spreading fast through the paper-filled first floor.
Outside, Ella recognizes the gravity of her choice: by trapping the stairs and lighting the house, she has effectively sentenced her sleeping mother to burn. Hardening further, she concludes that her abusive father will be next, signaling a decisive and dangerous turn in her mindset.
