Summary
Ella narrates a past episode of needing money for basics like lunch and laundry. She seeks work from elderly neighbor Mrs. Fleming, who has previously paid her for chores. After Ella takes out the trash, Mrs. Fleming refuses to pay and accuses Ella of stealing from her purse, citing gossip from Ella’s mother about Ella’s behavior. Ella leaves, humiliated and still broke.
Returning home, Ella confronts the hazards of her hoarder household: toppled bottles block the door, and clutter fills the pantry and halls. She seizes a moment to bag trash and expired food, planning to dispose of it secretly so her mother cannot retrieve it.
