Overview
As the storm intensifies, Casey prepares a simple meal and wrestles with her distrust of neighbor Lee and her isolation. Rudy calls to warn the roof may be unsafe and says he booked her a room, but the phone line dies before sharing the address. With the roads dangerous and no communications, Casey decides to remain in the cabin. The choice heightens the stakes, leaving her vulnerable as the worst of the storm approaches.
Summary
Casey cleans up, cooks pasta with fresh tomato sauce, and looks out at the worsening rain, feeling a flicker of guilt over rebuffing Lee’s concern. She acknowledges Lee has helped before but still distrusts him, reflecting on her long-standing avoidance of close relationships since losing her father.
As she cooks, the phone rings. Over static, Rudy asks about the storm and admits he now believes the roof might be unsafe. Casey confirms Rudy hadn’t checked the back of the house, realizing the earlier lurker wasn’t him or Lee.
Rudy says the storm is far worse than expected and claims he found and booked a bed-and-breakfast for her. When Casey asks for the address, the connection deteriorates and the line goes dead. She confirms the phone service is out.
With communications down and the storm escalating, Casey weighs her options. Driving to find the inn seems perilous on flooded, slick dirt roads, and trekking half a mile through dangerous, wind-tossed woods to Lee’s cabin feels equally risky—and her distrust of Lee lingers.
Casey decides to stay put despite the roof concerns, accepting the immediate risk as the least bad option. She braces to survive the night alone.
