Summary
In a pre-timeline scene, Ella sits in the back of an ambulance, coughing from smoke as firefighters battle a blaze consuming her home. She told them her mother was inside, and she waits for news, imagining how her mother might have been trapped by piles of hoarded junk and blocked stairs.
A police officer confers with a paramedic, who returns to tell Ella her mother did not survive. Ella initially struggles to cry but then breaks down, comforted by the paramedic, while internally acknowledging she caused the fire and her mother’s death.
