Overview
Ella, sleepless and fixated on the Carters, arms herself with a stolen X-Acto knife and slips out at night to their home. Longing and resentment drive her to consider entering, escalating her pursuit of John Carter and raising the stakes of discovery and confrontation.
Summary
Unable to sleep and unsettled by the lingering rot of old pumpkin damage, Ella fixates on the Carter family—John, possible father; Vanessa, imagined kind stepmother; and Brittany, her classmate. The thoughts keep her awake and stir a longing for the life she believes could have been hers.
Seeking relief, Ella dresses and retrieves a hidden, stolen X-Acto knife from her dresser, rationalizing it as protection. She slips quietly past her mother’s room, navigates the cluttered stairs, and leaves the house undetected.
Intending only to walk, Ella instead heads purposefully to the Carters’ address she remembers from school. She studies their comfortable, welcoming home and feels the pull of what she imagines as her rightful family life.
Circling to the back, Ella debates turning back, hearing Anton’s caution in her head. Gripping the knife for courage, she pushes aside her hesitation and approaches, considering whether the back door might be open so she can look inside.
