Chapter 7
Overview
In a "Before" timeline, teenager Ella navigates her mother’s hoarded, smoke-filled home and finds a heavy, junk-filled fish tank blocking her desk. Her mother dismisses Ella’s needs and academic success, redirecting the conversation to past hardships and criticism. The scene establishes Ella’s neglect, unsafe environment, and determination to escape at eighteen.
Summary
Ella returns to her cluttered townhouse to find a heavy fish tank placed on her bedroom desk, now stuffed with pans and utensils. Unable to study and unable to move it, she seeks her mother’s help. The home’s hazards—blocked stairs and a smoke-saturated living room—underscore chronic neglect and hoarding.
Ella’s mother, absorbed in television and chain-smoking, claims the fish tank is a gift from a thrift store and suggests Ella study on her bed. When Ella mentions earning an A in math, her mother dismisses it and demands gratitude, reframing the purchase as sacrifice born of her own difficult childhood.
Pressed to thank her mother, Ella complies to avoid conflict. Her mother then criticizes Ella’s too-small shirt instead of addressing the desk problem, ignoring that clean, properly sized clothes are buried in disarray. Printed emails and piles of papers crowd the “couch,” emphasizing sustained dysfunction.
Back in her room, Ella cannot lift the tank even after removing the contents and assumes her mother enlisted a coworker, Wally, to carry it upstairs. Realizing the obstruction is likely permanent, Ella concludes she will endure the chaos until graduation, strengthening her resolve to leave home the moment she turns eighteen.
