Overview
On her walk home, Ella witnesses Devin violently assaulting Anton in a park. When Devin pulls a knife, Ella strikes him with a rock, knocking him unconscious. The sudden escalation forces Ella from passive victim to decisive actor, raising stakes around violence, culpability, and fallout at school.
Summary
Ella walks home through a springtime park, avoiding her cigarette- and rot-scented house. Still stung by Anton’s taunts at school, she appreciates the quiet and lingers near a thicket where she hears scuffling.
She discovers Devin savagely beating Anton. Ella feels grim satisfaction at Anton’s pain, but the situation escalates when Devin pulls a Swiss Army knife and advances. Recognizing the imbalance and immediate danger, Ella grabs a rock and, acting before she can second-guess herself, strikes Devin on the head from behind.
Devin collapses and lies motionless. Anton, bloodied and shaken, scrambles up and tells Ella she has killed Devin. Ella confronts the shocking consequences of her split-second decision, shifting from bystander to decisive protector in a violent confrontation that may have serious repercussions.
