Chapter 29
Overview
Anton teaches Ella to pick locks, escalating from an open door to a closed, locked closet. Triggered by trauma, Ella nearly panics, but Anton’s encouragement steadies her and she succeeds. Anton’s impulsive hug hints at deepening bonds. Ella ends newly confident in a skill that can help her free herself.
Summary
Anton eagerly instructs Ella in lockpicking, explaining pins and tension while demonstrating on a closet door left open. Ella struggles at first but, after repeated tries, manages to pop the lock within minutes, gaining basic confidence.
Anton then proposes a realistic test: Ella should unlock the door from inside the closed closet. Reluctant due to past trauma, Ella agrees only if Anton stays with her. With Brad locking them in, the confined space and imagined stench of rotten fruit trigger Ella’s panic and sweating hands, and she fumbles the tool.
Anton steadies Ella with calm coaching and reminders of her recent strengths—standing up to Devin and disrupting his father’s drinking. Drawing on his encouragement, Ella refocuses, feels for the binding pin, and finally hears the click as the door opens.
In the release of tension, Anton impulsively hugs Ella, then awkwardly apologizes. Ella accepts, proud of mastering a practical escape skill. She recognizes this as the first lesson that directly empowers her to free herself when no one else will.
