Summary
Casey ushers the drenched, bloodstained teenager into the cabin. The girl refuses to share her name, clutches herself, and avoids removing her coat. She retracts her knife and pockets it, signaling a tentative willingness to stay. Casey offers slippers and notes the girl’s soaked, failing clothing and waterlogged shoes.
When Casey reaches for her phone, the girl panics about being reported. Casey promises silence and explains the phone lines are down, which calms the girl. Seeking basic care, Casey offers food and points her to the sink; the girl scrubs the blood from her hands until they are clean, then perches facing the door, ready to bolt.
While pasta boils, Casey hides her Glock in the dresser, deciding it won’t be needed if trust holds. She retrieves a warm sweater to offer. Returning to the living room, she notices the girl’s cheap, overstuffed pink backpack left on the floor.
