Summary
Confronted with the red-haired girl drenched in blood, Casey notes the absence of visible injuries and questions the teen’s terse claim of a “bloody nose.” Drawing on her experience as a teacher, Casey recognizes the explanation doesn’t fit and grows suspicious that the blood belongs to someone else.
Despite her doubts, Casey honors her invitation and leads the girl toward the cabin. The storm intensifies, wind pushing them back, and Casey observes the girl’s inadequate coat and frailty. Approaching the cabin, Casey sees the precariously leaning tree tilting further, realizing a fall could crush the roof and endanger them both.
