Overview
Unable to sleep, Casey tries to read Eleanor’s hidden green notebook but is interrupted when Eleanor asks for comfort and a bedtime story. After Casey’s clumsy tale, Eleanor delivers a thinly veiled, threatening story mirroring their situation, warning Casey against betrayal. Casey ends the night unsettled and wary.
Summary
Casey stays awake on the sofa, anxious and fully dressed, her thoughts drifting to the day she was fired and the chaos of that incident. After confirming Eleanor seems asleep, Casey retrieves the green notebook from under the couch to examine it.
Before she can open it, Eleanor emerges, unable to sleep. Casey accompanies her to the bedroom and, despite the cold, sits by the bed to comfort her. When Eleanor requests a made-up scary story, Casey awkwardly tells a stitched-together urban legend that fails to impress.
Challenged, Eleanor tells her own story that transparently mirrors their situation: an older woman shelters a mysterious girl during a storm, makes a promise, then violates trust by snooping. The tale escalates into mutilation and fire, implying dire consequences if the woman betrays the girl.
Eleanor pointedly frames the story as a warning, then settles back to sleep. Casey, recognizing the message and the threat behind it, abandons reading the notebook and remains on edge, more fearful and cautious about Eleanor.
