Chapter Five

Overview

Back in Toronto after the canceled wedding, Frankie spirals on Aurora and Betty's sofa as Nate refuses to explain himself and George leaves for Peru. Her collapse exposes how deeply abandonment still governs her thinking, linking Nate's silence to the wound left by her mother's disappearance. When Nate finally meets her but offers only apologies and no answers, Frankie is left with no closure and reaches for George instead, asking him to come home.

Summary

In Toronto, Frankie moves onto Aurora and Betty's sofa and barely leaves it, while George and Frankie's brothers bring back the few belongings she still had at Nate's house. When George tells Frankie he cannot stay because he is leaving for an assignment in Peru, Frankie has a panic attack and begs to go with him. George calms her, refuses for now, and leaves with a goodbye that feels final.

As Nate ignores Frankie's calls and texts, Frankie becomes consumed by finding a reason for being abandoned. That obsession revives the same self-blaming pattern she developed after her mother disappeared, and Frankie lists her own supposed failures, deciding she must have done something wrong. George keeps checking on her, but his attention only makes Frankie miss him more, while Aurora and Betty quietly endure her collapse in their cramped apartment.

After an absurd message from Avery Harper-Klyne trying to sell her hair products, Frankie decides at least to return to work. She resumes developing recipes for Brie Palmer's cookbook, focusing intensely on slow-cooker macaroni and cheese. But Frankie's instability keeps breaking through: she erupts when a gym employee calls her "Mrs. Bacon," keeps trying to force an answer from Nate, and spends so much on cheese for testing that Brie' s finance department contacts her.

Frankie's unraveling worsens in practical ways too. She accidentally preheats Aurora's sweater-filled oven and maxes out her own credit card replacing the damaged clothes, while hiding that she cannot afford an apartment. Then Nate finally agrees to meet her in person. Frankie arrives ready to attack him, but when she sees how exhausted and devastated he looks, her anger collapses. She returns the engagement ring, Nate apologizes without explaining why he left, suggests Frankie take the half-paid honeymoon to Tofino, and says goodbye.

After that meeting, Frankie fully confronts the fact that her life has been blown apart and that she must start over at thirty. She retreats to the sofa again and refuses Aurora's offer to help her see a therapist, despite Aurora's concern. Two days later, Frankie's parents come to collect her, and from the back seat of their car Frankie texts George a direct plea: please come home.
