Chapter Thirty-Eight
Overview
Frankie and George stop pretending their bond is only friendship and give themselves fully to their growing romance. Their passion carries them back to the villa, but George slows things before sex, turning the moment from pure desire into a deeper act of care. When Frankie asks him to stay in bed with her, both of them affirm that this new relationship is real and emotionally safe.
Summary
On the beach after their date, Frankie and George kiss with a new level of certainty, both recognizing that their friendship has crossed into romance. Frankie asks whether this means George wants a second date, and George makes it clear he wants many more. Frankie responds that there is only one way forward for them: fully, with no half measures. Their teasing quickly turns into intense physical desire.
As they head back to the villa, Frankie is giddy and overwhelmed by the fact that she is finally with George. Their desire keeps interrupting their walk, and the mood becomes playful when Frankie challenges George to a race back to their room. The race echoes their childhood history together, reinforcing that this new intimacy is growing out of a much older bond. Frankie reaches the door first and claims her victory by pulling George inside.
In the room, Frankie immediately takes control, kissing George against the door and beginning to undress him. Frankie focuses on intimate details of George she has long noticed and imagined, including the scar above his hip and his tattoo. Frankie starts to move toward oral sex, but George stops her and pulls her back up, not because he does not want her, but because he is too affected and does not want their first night together to end too quickly or awkwardly.
George proposes a restrained ending to the evening, suggesting he kiss Frankie good night and sleep on the couch. Frankie rejects that idea and makes a more vulnerable request: she asks George to stay in bed with her because she wants to wake up beside him and know that what is happening between them is real. George reassures Frankie that their connection is real and agrees to stay. The chapter ends with Frankie falling asleep safely in George’s arms, feeling that both of them are finally secure with each other.
