Chapter Twenty-Eight
Overview
Frankie chases George to the beach after her disastrous dinner comment drives him away, and their argument forces the real meaning of her “sexless marriage” idea into the open. George makes clear that her suggestion wounded him because it implied she could imagine a life with him only without desire, even though his attraction to her is intense and immediate. The chapter turns their long-simmering tension into an explicit romantic and sexual confrontation, changing the stakes between them.
Summary
After George abruptly leaves the restaurant, Frankie follows him outside and learns he has brought the car around. The drive back to the resort is silent and tense, and when Frankie tries to apologize at the villa, George walks away again toward the beach instead of speaking to her.
Refusing to let him disappear, Frankie chases George down the beach past resort bonfires and finally catches up to him. She apologizes for her impulsive suggestion that they should have married each other in a sexless arrangement, explaining that what she really meant was that she misses being with him and hates how much time they spend apart. Frankie also tries to reassure George that he will find someone, but George remains angry rather than comforted.
George finally admits why Frankie's comment hurt him so badly. He asks whether Frankie truly believes he would want a life with someone who is not attracted to him, and he rejects her attempt to frame the idea as progressive. Frankie clarifies that she only meant she thought George might want a life with her because she enjoys being with him so much, but George says he does not want the sexless future she described.
When Frankie tries to leave in tears, George stops her and pulls her close. The physical contact makes their mutual desire unmistakable as George touches her, holds her against him, and reveals that he is anything but indifferent to her. Instead of kissing her, he breaks away after growling, “Fuck your sexless marriage,” and walks off, leaving Frankie shaken by the force of what has finally surfaced between them.
