Chapter Thirty-Seven
Overview
Frankie turns her promised date with George into a carefully arranged romantic dinner, but what matters most is that their connection still feels as natural and comfortable as ever. By the end of the night, Frankie consciously chooses to tear down the last emotional barrier between them and initiates another kiss. The chapter marks a decisive step from tentative possibility into openly embraced romance.
Summary
Frankie and George are led to a private table outside where the forest meets the beach. Kevin, the hotel host, has helped Frankie stage an intentionally romantic evening, complete with sparkling wine, lights in the trees, and blankets for later. Frankie jokes about making their dinner feel like a honeymoon, setting the tone for a date she has deliberately chosen and planned.
Over a special vegetarian meal prepared at Frankie’s request, Frankie and George fall into their usual easy rhythm. The wild mushroom pasta reminds them of childhood lessons from Frankie’s grandmother, and Frankie teases George about vegan cooking, stolen chickens, and his protein shakes. The familiar banter shows that even as their relationship shifts, the comfort and intimacy of their friendship remain intact.
As dinner continues, Frankie feels growing anticipation. She realizes that the date is not radically different from the meals they have always shared, and she is glad for that, but she also becomes newly aware of her physical desire for George and of the power of their earlier kiss. When George keeps his knee against hers, Frankie senses that he understands the direction her thoughts are taking.
After paying for dinner, Frankie takes George by the hand and leads him down to the beach. Standing barefoot beside the dark ocean under the moonlight, Frankie feels both nervous and certain that this is where she belongs. The setting makes the moment feel like a threshold into a new phase of their relationship.
Looking at George, Frankie reflects that he holds nearly every part of her life: her childhood, adolescence, adulthood, failures, and best self. Realizing that only one barrier remains between them, Frankie decides to stop holding back. She asks if she can kiss him, and George immediately answers by swooping down and kissing her, confirming that they have fully crossed from friendship into romance.
