Chapter Eighteen
Overview
Frankie discovers that George has been secretly researching how to help her survive her breakup, including consulting a psychiatrist about her situation. When George returns, their banter gives way to a vulnerable conversation in which Frankie admits she feels shut out of his life and fears he is only caring for her out of obligation. George firmly rejects that idea, deepening the emotional tension between them and shifting their Tofino week toward repairing, and possibly redefining, their bond.
Summary
Frankie wakes late in the Tofino villa and immediately feels how limited her time with George is before they separate again. A cheerful text from Brie telling her to enjoy Tofino and get inspired unsettles Frankie instead of comforting her, because it touches her insecurity about her stalled work and emotional state.
While making coffee, Frankie finds a hidden stack of George's printouts and notes about breakups. The material includes articles, advice columns, research, and a recent interview transcript with Dr. Nasseri. In the transcript, George explains that he is trying to help Frankie through her breakup, and Dr. Nasseri bluntly asks whether George has feelings for her, revealing that George's concern has been intense and personal. Reading this, Frankie keeps circling the same unresolved question about Nate: his last-minute exit still does not make sense to her, and she feels that some crucial truth is missing.
George returns from a run and catches Frankie with his papers. He takes them back, saying he will sort through them and give Frankie whatever is relevant, which confirms that he has been privately trying to manage her recovery. Frankie is also struck by how physically changed he is. Their teasing conversation about his body and new fitness habits turns serious when George reveals he has been running for three years, a change Frankie connects to the trauma he carried home from covering the wildfires.
As they keep talking, Frankie admits that she no longer knows the everyday details of George's life the way she once did. She says she wants his plan for the week to be about them as well as about helping her, because she wants their friendship to feel close and natural again. When Frankie finally blurts out that she thinks George has been pulling away and may only be helping her now out of obligation, George steps in, cups her face, and tells her she is completely wrong. After rejecting the idea that duty is motivating him, George ends the charged moment by saying he is going to shower and then take Frankie somewhere as part of her day to indulge.
