Chapter Twenty-One
Overview
In the aftermath of their charged day together, Frankie and George move into a more openly intimate rhythm, sharing a dinner that reminds Frankie how much passion and appetite she has lost. George helps her name that pain, reassures her about her talent and resilience, and agrees to sleep beside her instead of apart. The chapter deepens their emotional closeness while quietly signaling that George is still withholding something through the missing interview transcript.
Summary
After Derek drops them off from the boating excursion, Frankie and George return to the resort in a light, flirtatious mood. Frankie cannot stop noticing George differently: not just as her lifelong friend, but as a fully grown man with ambitions, history, and desires she is only beginning to understand. The shift unsettles her because it makes her feel both drawn to him and aware that their old dynamic has changed.
While getting ready for dinner, Frankie fixates on an upbeat text from Brie about getting inspired in Tofino. George reads the message and gently suggests that Frankie is reacting less to Brie than to her own unresolved feelings. His comment pushes Frankie to recognize that her frustration is tied to her own creative and emotional stagnation, even if she resists admitting it outright.
George takes Frankie to Pluvio in Ucluelet, where the inventive menu and playful atmosphere immediately excite her. He orders for Frankie with uncanny accuracy, showing how closely he knows her tastes, and together they enthusiastically try multiple dishes. The meal reminds Frankie how much joy, curiosity, and appetite she once brought to food, making the dinner feel both pleasurable and quietly revealing.
Back at the resort, George carries an exhausted Frankie inside, first on his back and then in his arms, heightening the romantic tension between them. In the bedroom, Frankie remembers how hungry she once felt for adventure, food, and life, and admits that losing that feeling is what made Brie's text sting. George answers with a direct affirmation of Frankie's talent, strength, and importance in his life, telling her she will feel that hunger again.
Frankie then asks George not to sleep on the couch because she does not want to wake up alone. George agrees to stay in the bed, a meaningful step toward greater intimacy and trust. Before turning in, he gives Frankie the rest of his research folder, but Frankie notices that the interview transcript is missing; even so, they fall asleep in the same bed, with Frankie drifting into dreams of being held close.
