Chapter Twenty

Overview

At the sauna retreat, Frankie and George’s physical and emotional chemistry becomes impossible to ignore. Their day of isolation leads to unusually frank conversation: George reveals he has started therapy, wants an adult version of their bond built on honesty, and admits he is looking for one lasting partner. By the end of the chapter, George strongly implies he already knows who he wants, but the moment is cut short before either of them acts on it.

Summary

At the secluded sauna retreat, Frankie tries to settle into the beautiful setting, but being alone with George in bathing suits makes it impossible to ignore her attraction to him. Frankie remembers first feeling that attraction at fourteen and reflects on how carefully she has managed it over the years to preserve their friendship. When George openly stares at her body in the sauna, Frankie realizes the tension is no longer one-sided, and they abruptly cool off by jumping into the freezing water.

As the day continues, Frankie and George move between the sauna and the ocean, and the physical intensity of the experience leaves Frankie feeling vividly alive. While George swims and kayaks, Frankie notices her own desire returning after months of numbness following Nate leaving her before the wedding. The retreat becomes more than a relaxing outing: it strips away Frankie’s usual defenses and makes her newly aware of both her body and George’s.

Later, the two lie together in a hammock and begin sharing the kinds of personal details Frankie has missed. George offers small facts about his life, then moves into bigger truths, admitting that he has started therapy after the wildfire season and that stress often turns his inner self-criticism loud and punishing. Frankie is surprised but supportive, and George says he wants them to stop trying to recreate their childhood bond and instead learn how to be honest with each other as adults.

The conversation turns to the future. George says he wants to keep traveling and writing, hopes to write a nonfiction book, and, most importantly, wants to share his life with one person. Frankie is startled, partly because she has always thought of George as unattached, and her reaction reveals how much she has depended on being central in his life. When Frankie jokes about making him a dating profile, George rejects the idea and says he already knows what he wants and will not find her on an app. George brushes Frankie’s hair from her face and the moment feels on the verge of a confession or kiss, but the arrival of Derek’s boat interrupts them.
