Chapter Thirty-Five
Overview
George designs Day Five around the idea of wanting, pushing Frankie to name her needs instead of hiding them. A floatplane trip and the hot springs intensify the unresolved tension after their kiss, and Frankie finally admits to herself that she wants both a fuller life and George. By the end of the chapter, Frankie begins voicing those desires aloud, marking a major emotional shift toward honesty and change.
Summary
On Day Five of George’s plan, George takes Frankie to the Tofino harbor and reveals that the day’s theme is “Want,” meaning Frankie should practice naming her needs instead of expecting others to guess them. Their earlier kiss still hangs between them, making their usual banter feel charged. When Frankie asks directly where they are going, George tells her they are flying to Hot Springs Cove in Nism̓aakqin Park so she can think about what she wants.
During the floatplane ride, Frankie is frightened, but George immediately takes her hand as the plane lifts off. His instinctive comfort calms her, and they hold hands for the entire flight while taking in the islands and mountains below. The moment reinforces how deeply George understands her without needing to be told.
After landing, Frankie and George hike through the rainforest, change into swimsuits, and climb down to the geothermal pools. Surrounded by families and other visitors, Frankie realizes the setting offers no privacy, but physical closeness in the hot water intensifies her attraction to George instead of easing it. Watching him in the pools makes Frankie admit to herself that her desire for George is no longer containable.
Overheated and overwhelmed, Frankie moves to a rocky ledge to cool off and think. She connects her cracked-open feelings for George to a broader realization that this week has changed her: making dinner the night before showed her that her job is not enough, and she now wants more creative fulfillment and plans to talk to Brie about it. When George asks what she is thinking, Frankie tells him both that she wants more from her work and that she is thinking about him and what she wants, and George encourages her to say more when she is ready.
