Chapter Four

Overview

Nate abruptly ends the wedding by leaving Frankie a note instead of facing her, plunging her into shock and forcing an immediate collapse of the life she expected to begin. As Frankie is carried away from the manor by her family and quietly helped by George, the breakup echoes her old abandonment wounds. The chapter matters because Frankie refuses to retreat into her parents' home, and Aurora's offer gives her a new path forward in Toronto.

Summary

On the morning of her wedding, Frankie wakes to a note from Nate on hotel stationery: he loves her, but he cannot marry her. The shock is so overwhelming that much of what follows disappears into a blur. Frankie tries Nate's phone, but it goes straight to voicemail, confirming that he has left rather than face her directly.

In the aftermath, Frankie falls apart physically and emotionally. Aurora arrives with Frankie's mother after Frankie apparently calls for help, and both women hold Frankie while she sobs. Although Frankie does not clearly see him, George carries Frankie to her parents' car and quietly promises that she will be okay, showing that he steps in when she is most vulnerable.

During the drive away from Darlington Manor, Aurora stays beside Frankie as Frankie vomits in the back seat. Frankie's father buys her ginger ale, and when Frankie's mother says she has never seen Frankie this devastated, Frankie's father compares it to Frankie's ninth birthday, when Frankie's mother was absent. That comparison links Nate's abandonment to an earlier formative wound in Frankie's life.

As the car nears Toronto, a new fear breaks through Frankie's shock: without the wedding, she no longer knows where she will live. Frankie panics when her father says they are going home, because returning to her parents' house feels like losing the adult life she built in the city. Aurora calms Frankie through the panic attack and immediately offers Frankie a place to stay with her, which gives Frankie a way forward. When Frankie asks about her wedding dress and belongings, Aurora says George will take care of everything at the manor, and Frankie's father asks for Aurora's address as Frankie finally goes quiet.
