Chapter Nineteen

Overview

George takes Frankie on a surprise outing designed to force her to slow down and care for herself, showing that his concern for her well-being is active and deliberate. At the marina, Derek’s teasing reveals that George talked about Frankie often during the wildfire summer, underscoring how central she has remained in his life. The chapter ends with George unveiling a secluded floating sauna and cold plunge, turning the day into an intimate act of care rather than a conventional date.

Summary

George drives Frankie through Tofino and tells her that the day’s purpose is self-care: Frankie is supposed to stop worrying about everyone else and focus on what she needs. Frankie jokes about manicures and facials, but George pushes back, arguing that real self-care means listening to her body and mind, eating well, and treating herself with more kindness than she usually does when life is hard. Frankie resists his lecture with sarcasm, yet she also knows he is right that she often neglects herself.

At the marina, George keeps the destination secret, framing it as a surprise. Their banter continues as Frankie teases him about patience and about still loving her despite how difficult she can be, while George hints that he can be patient when something truly matters. The exchange heightens the intimacy between them before they reach the dock.

There they meet Derek, a retired fire chief George knew while covering the Kelowna wildfires. Derek greets George warmly and immediately recognizes Frankie as "your Frankie," making it clear that George spoke about her often during that difficult summer. When Frankie insists they are not married and that this is not really a honeymoon, Derek still jokes about future marriage, embarrassing George and reinforcing how obvious their connection appears to outsiders.

Derek takes them by boat through Clayoquot Sound, pointing out wildlife and the largely untouched shoreline. After about half an hour, he drops them at an isolated floating dock with a modern wooden structure, kayaks, diving boards, and no reception or Wi-Fi except for an emergency walkie-talkie. His instructions and teasing exit leave Frankie and George alone in a striking, private setting.

Once Derek leaves, Frankie jokes that they may be at a sex cult initiation, then asks George about Derek’s assumptions. George explains that the wildfire season was brutal and that he must have talked about Frankie too much, which caused Derek to get the wrong impression. When Frankie asks what they are actually doing there, George reveals the surprise: the building is a sauna, the inlet is their cold plunge, and the whole outing is his idea of a better, more restorative spa day for Frankie.
