Chapter Twenty-Three

Overview

Frankie and George wake in an accidentally intimate tangle that makes their mutual attraction impossible to ignore, even as both try to frame it as an embarrassing mistake. Later, texts from Frankie’s family and friends reinforce what she is resisting: other people can already see them as a couple. By breakfast, George responds with apology and restraint, but his promise of a new adventure shows that their emotional closeness is still deepening despite the awkwardness.

Summary

On the third morning in Tofino, Frankie wakes while pressed against George in bed and realizes he is half asleep, holding her tightly and grinding against her while murmuring her name and calling her sweetheart. The moment is intensely awkward because Frankie had been having her own sexual dream about him, and her body responds even while her mind insists that crossing that line would be dangerous. When she finally wakes him, George is horrified by what happened and immediately tries to put distance between them.

George, embarrassed and flustered, explains that he only stayed in bed because Frankie had said she did not like waking up alone. Frankie tries to calm him by admitting that she was also dreaming about him and may have moved closer in her sleep, making the incident feel mutual rather than predatory. Instead of easing him, her confession only leaves George even more shaken, especially when Frankie awkwardly jokes that they should both pretend the whole thing never happened. George decides he needs space and goes for a run.

Left alone, Frankie goes to the resort dining room and is repeatedly treated as Mrs. Gardiner, reinforcing the honeymoon-like intimacy of the trip. While waiting for George, she texts Darwin and Aurora. Darwin checks on George, which reminds Frankie that her family is unusually focused on him, and Aurora reacts to a photo of Frankie and George by declaring that they look in love. Those outside observations deepen Frankie’s discomfort because they echo the attraction she is already trying to suppress.

To distract herself, Frankie reads the breakup research George gave her, noticing his careful annotations. When George joins her for breakfast, he apologizes formally for the morning and says he will sleep on the couch for the rest of the week, showing how seriously he takes Frankie’s comfort. Frankie tries to defuse the tension with teasing, but George remains rattled until she asks about the day’s plans. That question lets him recover his usual composure, and the chapter ends with George promising a new adventure, shifting them forward even as their mutual desire becomes harder to deny.
