Chapter Twenty-Six

Overview

After surfing, Frankie and George share a quiet, intimate evening on the beach that makes Frankie confront how natural and deep her feelings for him have become. Small gestures of care, talk of a future together, and a physically close sunset photo push their friendship closer to romance. By the end of the chapter, Frankie can no longer ignore that being with George now feels both right and dangerous.

Summary

After their first day of surfing, Frankie and George spend the late afternoon relaxing on the beach outside the resort with drinks and books, planning to dress up later for dinner at the Wickaninnish Inn. Frankie wakes from a nap to find George gone and reflects on how familiar the scene feels, recalling their childhood summers spent reading together by the lake. While waiting, she flips through a cookbook from the resort gift shop and looks forward to the meal ahead.

George returns carrying cocktails and already dressed for dinner. Their easy teasing quickly shifts into a quieter intimacy when Frankie removes his glasses to clean them, something she realizes she does for him automatically. The moment underscores how habitual and natural her care for George has become.

As they sit together, Frankie asks about the lullaby George is humming and learns again that it is his mother’s song, "À la claire fontaine." George admits he is happy, and Frankie notes that she is the only person who has ever pointed out his habit of humming it. Watching him read and settle into the evening, Frankie feels both deeply content and newly aware of how much she wants to keep him close despite his restless, work-driven life.

That feeling leads Frankie into dangerous romantic thoughts. She briefly imagines marrying George and being with him forever, then blames the strong drink and her hunger for the intensity of the idea. Still, when she brings up his earlier comment about the two of them still being friends in their eighties, she admits that she likes the image of their future together.

Wanting to capture the moment, Frankie suggests taking a photo in the sunset light. When she reaches for George’s hand, he pulls her down instead, tickles her, and then draws her back against his chest. As Frankie takes the picture, she sees in the screen that they look like a couple, and she recognizes that the last two days have felt that way too.

When George notices her goose bumps, he asks if she is cold and then wraps his arms more tightly around her, rubbing warmth into her shoulders and holding her close. Frankie is overwhelmed by the physical closeness and by her own feelings, remembering his earlier invitation to tell him what she wants but remaining silent. The chapter ends with George humming again while Frankie listens to her racing heart, fully aware that their bond is shifting into something more intimate and risky.
