Chapter Thirty-Six

Overview

A visit to Tonquin Beach deepens Frankie’s sense of wonder, creativity, and emotional openness, while a brief text exchange with her mother confirms how happy she is in Tofino. That evening, Frankie stops hesitating and asks George to treat their dinner as a first date. By choosing him openly and asking for more than friendship, Frankie changes the direction of their relationship and leaves Nate firmly behind.

Summary

After returning from the hot springs, Frankie goes with George to Tonquin Beach even though she is tired. The exposed tide pools astonish her with starfish, kelp, crabs, and anemones, and the beauty makes her think of her mother and of creative possibilities for her own future. George notices Frankie’s wonder and gently points out how much she has changed.

Back at the resort, Frankie sends photos to her mother, who excitedly identifies the anemones and asks whether Frankie is enjoying herself. Frankie replies that she is having the best time and, after pausing to consider George, describes him as perfect. This exchange reinforces both Frankie’s joy in the trip and the clarity of her growing feelings.

Frankie naps in the late afternoon, then finds that George has left a note saying he has gone for a walk and asking her to meet him for dinner if she wakes before he returns. She goes to find him on the point and becomes self-conscious about the dress she chose for the evening. When George hesitates, Frankie assumes he dislikes how she looks, but George explains that he struggles to speak because seeing her dressed up leaves him momentarily speechless.

That reassurance gives Frankie the courage to act on what she realized earlier. Remembering that George asked her to name what she wants, Frankie tells him she does not need more time. She asks him to treat their dinner as a real date and to consider whether he wants a second, third, and fourth date because she wants to try being more than friends.

Frankie then fully crosses the emotional line she has been approaching. She tells George that what she had with Nate feels insignificant beside the history and possibility she shares with George, and that she wants to find out what their relationship could become. George responds with warmth, suggests they start over so he will not ruin their first date, and finally tells Frankie she looks beautiful, marking a hopeful beginning to their romantic relationship.
