Chapter Forty-Six
Overview
Francesca and George begin their last day by burning Nate’s breakup letter, turning Francesca’s ruined wedding into something she can finally leave behind. Kevin then reveals that Nate paid for Francesca’s stay and that even an outsider could see George’s love for her. But when Francesca calls Nate for closure, Nate implies that George secretly influenced the end of their engagement, transforming a chapter of healing into a new crisis of trust.
Summary
On their final morning in Tofino, Francesca and George walk the beach hand in hand to complete the last item in his plan: a closure ceremony for Francesca’s broken engagement. George admits he has been carrying Nate’s wedding-cancellation letter ever since he packed Francesca’s room after the wedding fell apart, and he also reveals that Francesca’s wedding dress is still safely hidden at the Big House. Touched by George’s care, Francesca decides to leave the dress there as a secret keepsake, then reads Nate’s letter one last time and burns it.
Afterward, George collects sand for his collection and they separate briefly so Francesca can pack. Back at the villa, Francesca finds Kevin inside with a gift and thanks him for all the special treatment he has given them. When Francesca awkwardly admits that she and George are not really married, Kevin laughingly reveals that he already knew: Nate had called ahead, explained the wedding disaster, and asked Kevin to take care of Francesca on his credit card. Kevin says he went along with everything because he could plainly see how deeply George loved Francesca the moment they arrived.
Left alone, Francesca opens Nate’s gift: an expensive chef’s knife and a recipe journal. Although both are beautiful, they feel wrong for her, and the mismatch confirms her growing understanding that Nate himself was wrong for her too. Francesca calls Nate to thank him, and the conversation stays polite but final. Nate says he has been checking on her through Aurora, says he wants the best for her, and apologizes again for ending their relationship by letter; Francesca accepts some of the apology but makes clear that friendship is unlikely.
Francesca then asks Nate for clarity about why he really ended their engagement. At that moment George steps onto the deck, and Nate realizes he is nearby. Nate responds bitterly, saying that now he knows he did the right thing because George was standing in the way and that George can explain what happened. When Francesca asks what he means, Nate says, “George didn’t tell you?” and hangs up, leaving Francesca staring at George as his guilty expression confirms he has hidden something important about the breakup.
