Chapter Twelve

Overview

On the way to Tofino, Frankie and George quickly recover their old ease, turning the abandoned honeymoon into a space where their bond feels natural and intensely supportive again. George reveals that the trip is actually a researched, seven-day breakup-recovery plan, showing how seriously he has taken Frankie’s pain and how determined he is to help her heal.

The chapter also exposes how unprocessed Frankie’s breakup remains when she cannot even say Nate’s name aloud. By naming the first day “Wallow” and admitting he feels guilty for not pushing harder before the wedding, George shifts the trip from escape to emotional reckoning and deepens the unresolved stakes between them.

Summary

On the drive to Tofino, Frankie is awed by the Pacific Rim Highway’s beauty but unnerved by its dangerous curves and rain-slicked cliffs. The cramped trip still feels joyful because George keeps her fed, teases her, and distracts her with music. As they sing Kelly Clarkson together and laugh until Frankie cries, Frankie notices how happy George seems and connects his humming to memories of his late mother, Lily.

As they near the resort, George admits he coordinated with Aurora and Frankie’s mother because he believes Frankie is still deeply hurt after the breakup. Frankie insists she is doing better, but George pushes back and says the people who love her disagree. He then reveals that the week is not just a getaway but a structured seven-day recovery plan designed to help Frankie heal, regain her confidence, and feel like herself again.

Frankie first assumes George is joking, but he insists he has researched the process, made an itinerary, and assigned each day a theme. His seriousness makes clear that helping Frankie is now his project, motivated by both concern and his desire to get his best friend back. Frankie realizes how much effort he has put into caring for her, and the exchange reminds her of how deeply they understand and rely on each other.

When Frankie says her real problems are not about Nate, George tests that claim by asking her to describe what happened. Frankie cannot bring herself to say Nate’s name or speak aloud that her fiancé left her the day before their wedding, which proves George’s point that she has not fully faced what happened. Because she cannot yet name the betrayal, George argues that she has not actually moved on.

George explains that the trip has already begun and labels the first stage “Day One: Wallow.” He says Frankie needs to acknowledge and respect her pain instead of avoiding it. Frankie agrees to go along with the plan, partly because it may help her recover and partly because she hopes it can restore the honesty and closeness she once shared with George.

At the end of the chapter, Frankie tells George she feels lucky to be doing this with him. George admits he feels guilty that he is only here because she was hurt, and when Frankie reminds him that Nate’s actions were not his fault, George quietly reveals his deeper regret: he believes he should have tried harder to stop her from getting hurt in the first place.
