Chapter Forty-Three

Overview

After the whale tour, Frankie reaches out to her mother and begins undoing years of silence about whales, grief, and the past. Their conversation also becomes a turning point in Frankie's love story, as her mother reveals she doubted Nate was right for her and has long believed George might be. The chapter matters because Frankie starts repairing her bond with her mother while gaining emotional permission to imagine a real future with George.

Summary

As rain starts in Tofino, George parks outside the brewery and goes to order food from the Japanese street-food trailer next door, kissing Frankie before he leaves the car. Left alone, Frankie realizes that seeing the whales has changed something in her. Because the trip made her feel closer to understanding her mother, Frankie does something unusual for her and calls home.

Frankie tells her mother about the whale-watching trip, and her mother responds with excitement instead of avoidance. Encouraged by how warmly the conversation goes, Frankie asks if, when she returns home, her mother will finally tell her about her own whales. Frankie also asks about Francesca, the whale tied to her childhood pain, and her mother quietly admits she still knows where Francesca was last spotted and promises to explain everything when Frankie is home.

The conversation then turns to George. Frankie first gives her usual automatic answer about him, but then admits that things between them are changing fast and may be becoming romantic. Her mother asks whether that feels good, and when Frankie asks for advice, Frankie realizes she actually wants her mother's opinion despite fearing it. Her mother says she had long assumed something might already have happened between Frankie and George, especially when George moved far away after graduation, and she reveals that she also wondered whether Frankie was marrying the wrong person when she got engaged to Nate.

Frankie is stunned that her mother had seen so much, and the honesty makes the conversation feel unexpectedly easy. Her mother says Frankie and George have always made each other more fully themselves, combining excitement with steadiness. She cannot promise the relationship will be simple, but she says she does not think it is a terrible idea; she thinks it is a wonderful one.

By the end of the call, the mood is affectionate and hopeful. Frankie asks her mother not to tell anyone else, and they joke about how much everyone likes George, including the fact that he sends flowers on her mother's birthday. Frankie admits she does not know what a future with George would look like, and her mother reminds her that uncertainty is part of life. The chapter closes with Frankie telling her mother she misses her, and her mother answering that she misses Frankie all the time.
