TWENTY-THREE
Overview
Juliette reflects on her painful past with Adam, the accidental death of the little boy, and the years of punishment that followed. In the present, Adam defends Juliette from Kenji’s curiosity, then confirms he intends to escape with her during an upcoming military deployment.
Adam’s memories reveal that he has long seen Juliette as compassionate rather than monstrous, giving Juliette emotional validation she has never received. The chapter raises the stakes by setting a deadline: they may have only three weeks before war and unrest create their only chance to run.
Summary
Juliette reflects on being fourteen and secretly loving Adam Kent at school. Adam was the only person who showed her kindness, stayed near enough to protect her from others, and never forced her to explain herself. Juliette remembers believing Adam might see something good in her, despite everyone else treating her as dangerous.
Juliette then revisits the event that led to her imprisonment: in a grocery store, she tried to comfort a neglected little boy by taking his hands. Because Juliette did not understand her power, Juliette drained the boy’s life while thinking she was helping him. Afterward, Juliette spent years in hospitals, courts, juvenile detention, and treatment before being locked away as a threat to the public.
Back in the present, a knock interrupts Juliette and Adam. Adam speaks to Kenji at the door, refusing to let Kenji see Juliette as a spectacle and angrily sending him away. Embarrassed, Adam returns while Juliette looks out the window at the ruined city, civilians, soldiers, trash, and cold misery beyond the compound.
Adam embraces Juliette from behind, and Juliette lets herself enjoy the rare comfort of being touched without hurting someone. When Juliette says she wants to leave, Adam explains that the troops are preparing for a major attack against growing resistance groups. Adam believes the best chance to escape is when the army deploys, because the chaos will delay pursuit.
Juliette asks why Adam would risk his life for her. Adam answers by recalling many moments from school when Juliette quietly sacrificed for others: giving up a field-trip seat, sharing lunch, and taking blame for another student. Adam says Juliette never asked for anything and no one gave her a chance, but he has thought about her for years and would follow her anywhere.
Adam warns that they have three weeks at most before the situation with the mobs becomes uncontrollable. Juliette accepts the plan while overwhelmed by Adam’s faith in her, ending the chapter with the urgent realization that their window for escape is limited.
