THIRTY-NINE

Overview

Warner captures Juliette after Adam is shot, tells Juliette that Adam is dead, and reveals through touch that Warner is also immune to Juliette's power. Warner's obsession escalates as Warner tries to force intimacy and convince Juliette they are meant to rule together. Juliette turns Warner's confidence against Warner, pretends to yield, steals Warner's gun, and shoots Warner.

Summary

After reaching the cars, Juliette sees blood everywhere and Adam on the ground, surrounded by soldiers. Warner restrains Juliette, covers Juliette's mouth to keep Juliette from screaming, and drags Juliette into a functioning building, where the lights reveal a classroom.

Inside, Warner is openly pleased to have captured Juliette again. Juliette can think only of Adam, but Warner tells Juliette that Adam Kent is dead. Juliette is cornered and terrified, especially because Warner is touching Juliette with bare hands and is unharmed, confirming that Warner is immune to Juliette's lethal touch.

Warner tries to persuade Juliette that they belong together because Warner can survive Juliette's touch and believes Juliette wants power, violence, and Warner himself. Juliette rejects Warner and calls Warner insane, but Warner insists that Juliette will return with him whether Juliette wants to or not, while still claiming to love Juliette and wanting Juliette to choose him.

When Juliette notices the silver gleam of a gun inside Warner's jacket, Juliette changes strategy. Knowing Warner has the advantage and that Juliette cannot overpower Warner directly, Juliette forces herself to relax and pretend to respond to Warner's advances so Warner will lower his guard.

Warner kisses and handles Juliette while Juliette struggles to stay focused on Adam and on reaching the weapon. Warner lifts Juliette against the wall, unintentionally giving Juliette the angle Juliette needs to reach into the jacket. Juliette grabs the gun, Warner realizes the deception too late, and Juliette fires. The shot marks a small victory because the blood spilled this time is not Adam's.
