THIRTEEN
Overview
Warner escalates from persuasion to coercion when Juliette refuses to cooperate, forcing Jenkins to touch Juliette so Warner can witness Juliette's power. The incident confirms the horrific danger of Juliette's skin and reveals that Juliette's ability can feel disturbingly empowering even as Juliette hates causing pain.
Warner's willingness to sacrifice a soldier deepens Juliette's revulsion and shows how far Warner will go to turn Juliette into a weapon. Adam's horrified presence in the crowd adds shame and emotional stakes as Juliette loses control in front of the one person Juliette cares about.
Summary
After dinner, Adam disappears with other soldiers, leaving Juliette uncertain and alone with Warner. Warner insists on walking Juliette to her room and tries to frame himself as someone who does not have to be her enemy, but Juliette rejects him and says they will always oppose each other.
In the elevator and hallway, Warner continues pressing for intimacy and cooperation. Juliette notices that Warner is carefully covered in protective clothing and asks how Warner discovered the truth about Juliette's lethal touch. Warner refuses to answer immediately and instead suggests a future conversation, then reacts with interest when Juliette asks for Warner's first name.
Warner offers to tell Juliette his name if Juliette shows him what Juliette can do. When Juliette refuses to touch Warner, Warner calls over Jenkins, an unprotected soldier, and orders Jenkins to take Juliette downstairs while warning Jenkins not to release Juliette no matter what. Jenkins understands the danger, and Juliette runs in panic, but Warner orders the surrounding soldiers to stop Juliette.
Cornered by the soldiers, Juliette collapses and pleads with Jenkins not to touch Juliette. Warner points a gun at Jenkins and repeats the order, forcing Jenkins to grab Juliette's bare arms. Juliette immediately drains Jenkins's strength and feels his pain and life force flow into Juliette, which horrifies Juliette even more because part of Juliette feels power and pleasure from it.
Juliette kicks Jenkins away to break the contact, leaving Jenkins collapsed on the floor while the soldiers stare in fear. Juliette screams for someone to help Jenkins and rejects Warner when Warner tries to comfort Juliette. Warner finally orders Kent, Curtis, and Soledad to take care of Jenkins, then scoops Juliette into Warner's arms as Juliette continues struggling and the world goes black.
