EIGHTEEN
Overview
Fletcher’s execution leaves Juliette horrified by Warner’s power and the soldiers’ unquestioning obedience. Warner’s response deepens the divide between his worldview and Juliette’s, as Warner frames violence as necessity and Juliette sees it as proof of Warner’s monstrosity.
Juliette’s concern for Adam resurfaces, and Warner reveals that Adam will return to escort Juliette to the next stage of Warner’s plans. The chapter sharpens the central conflict over whether Juliette’s lethal touch is a curse to fear or a power Warner intends to exploit.
Summary
After Warner executes Private Fletcher, the assembled soldiers remain silent and motionless while Fletcher’s body lies on the concrete. Warner calmly dismisses Sector 45, and every soldier drops to one knee, showing the fear and obedience Warner commands.
Juliette is stunned and physically shaken by the killing. Warner pulls Juliette away when Juliette cannot move, dismissing Juliette’s shock by telling Juliette that she needs to eat more. Juliette finally accuses Warner of murder and, outside the door, shoves Warner in disgust.
Warner reverses the confrontation by pinning Juliette against the door and holding Juliette’s face in his gloved hands. Warner tells Juliette that life is bleak and that sometimes a person must learn to shoot first, revealing Warner’s brutal justification for violence.
Back in Juliette’s room, Warner says Juliette should sleep and that food will be sent up. Juliette immediately asks about Adam’s safety and whether Warner plans to hurt Adam. Warner notices Juliette’s concern, asks why Juliette cares, and then says Adam will bring Juliette to Warner the next day when their “real work” begins.
Juliette insists that Juliette and Warner are not the same, but Warner challenges Juliette’s self-hatred. When Juliette calls Juliette’s touch a disease, Warner angrily insists it is a gift and that Juliette has potential. Juliette rejects Warner’s view by calling Warner a murderer, and Warner leaves after ordering Juliette to sleep.
