Overview
Juliette wakes from the guards' assault to find herself isolated, injured, and without Adam. When she is taken from the cell, she discovers Adam is actually a soldier named Adam Kent, apparently involved in her confinement and betrayal.
Juliette is brought before Warner, a young military authority who is fascinated by her and has been using Adam to test or observe her. Rather than execute Juliette, Warner reveals that he has a proposition, shifting her situation from simple imprisonment toward a more deliberate and dangerous use of her power.
Summary
Juliette wakes after two days, injured from the guards' attack. She finds water and food beside her, eats despite her pain, and discovers bruises across her body. Adam is gone, and Juliette is alone in a small cell with only a slot in the door for air.
A guard enters and orders Juliette to follow. Juliette obeys, hoping Adam is safe, but Adam appears beside the guard in uniform and points a gun at Juliette. The realization that Adam is a soldier devastates Juliette, who believes he betrayed her and wants her dead.
Juliette is marched through the facility and struck down when bright fluorescent light overwhelms her eyes. A commanding young man orders the lights dimmed and has her released so he can see her face. Juliette recognizes him as powerful and dangerous, with soldiers around him and the name Warner on his decorated suit.
Warner reveals that Adam's full name is Adam Kent and implies Adam was placed in Juliette's cell deliberately. Juliette connects this to rumors of undercover soldiers who reported suspicious people to the authorities, though she does not understand why Adam was sent to spy on her. Adam remains controlled and silent, refusing to meet Juliette's emotional reaction.
When Juliette asks whether Warner intends to kill her, Roland strikes her in the spine and knocks her down. Warner mildly rebukes Roland and instead addresses Juliette directly, saying he has a proposition for her.
