THIRTY-ONE

Overview

Juliette meets James, Adam’s lively ten-year-old brother, and discovers Adam has told him about Juliette’s lethal touch and painful past. The reunion reveals Adam’s hidden domestic life and raises the stakes: Warner may not know where James is, but Adam expects Warner to find out.

Adam’s home is concealed beneath an abandoned building, and the chapter shifts the escape from immediate flight into preparation for resistance. Juliette’s fear of harming others begins to soften through James’s easy acceptance.

Summary

Juliette meets Adam’s younger brother, James, and is startled that Adam never mentioned having a sibling. James recognizes Juliette because Adam has talked about Juliette often, which embarrasses Adam and surprises Juliette.

James innocently comments on Juliette’s revealing clothes, and Adam sends James away to check their living space. When Juliette asks whether James’s presence is safe, Adam reassures Juliette by implication, though Juliette worries about the danger Juliette might pose to a child.

James returns and jokingly offers Juliette a handshake, terrifying Juliette because Juliette’s touch can kill. James reveals Adam told James about Juliette’s “magical powers,” and Juliette learns Adam also told James that Juliette has no parents and is “like” them.

As Adam retrieves a flashlight and guides Juliette forward, Juliette asks whether Warner will look for Adam at home. Adam explains that public records list Adam as having no home, but Warner knows Adam has a brother and will eventually try to find James, so they must prepare to fight back.

James leads Adam and Juliette through an underground parking garage beneath an abandoned office building. Adam enters a pass code at a steel door, opens it, and Juliette is stunned by what she sees inside.
