FORTY-FIVE
Overview
Juliette is led deeper into the underground refuge and discovers it is a large, organized city rather than a simple hiding place. Kenji reveals that he was deliberately placed near Adam because this group has been searching for Juliette, shifting Juliette’s understanding of his role and the refuge’s purpose.
Castle, the leader of the movement, meets Juliette and confirms he knows of her powers. Juliette demands proof that Adam and James are safe before cooperating, and Castle responds by introducing her to Omega Point, a broader resistance community with plans beyond survival.
Summary
Juliette changes into oversized borrowed clothes from Kenji because her own clothing has been destroyed. Still anxious and distrustful, Juliette presses Kenji and Winston for answers about Castle, Adam, and James. Kenji insists Adam and James are fine and asks Juliette to trust them, but Juliette remains unconvinced without proof.
Kenji and Winston lead Juliette through a vast underground complex that resembles a hidden city. Juliette sees stone corridors, artificial lights, computers, unfamiliar machinery, and many residents moving through rooms. When Juliette asks how the place is powered, Kenji says they steal electricity.
Before sending Juliette into Castle’s room, Kenji reveals that his presence in the army and at Adam’s home was not accidental. Kenji was assigned to know where Adam lived, and the people here have been searching for Juliette. This revelation deepens Juliette’s shock and uncertainty about everyone’s motives.
Juliette waits alone until Castle arrives. Castle is calm, controlled, and authoritative, and Castle says he has heard stories about Juliette’s lethal touch and extraordinary strength. Juliette refuses to cooperate until Castle answers her questions and lets Juliette confirm that Adam and James are safe.
Castle praises Juliette’s loyalty and agrees to show Juliette around. Castle guides Juliette through the dining hall, dormitories, training facilities, common rooms, bathrooms, and meeting halls, revealing a highly organized underground community. Juliette realizes the refuge is not merely a shelter but the base of a purposeful movement, and Castle formally welcomes Juliette to Omega Point.
