Overview

Juliette wakes in Warner’s bedroom after fainting from the forced demonstration with Jenkins, and Warner shifts between unsettling tenderness and open cruelty. Their confrontation reveals Warner’s belief in fear as power, hints at Warner’s father and broader authority, and exposes Warner’s suspicion that Juliette is not as detached from her lethal ability as Juliette wants to believe.

Warner refuses to release Juliette or explain why he truly needs Juliette, deepening the mystery around Warner’s plans. The chapter strengthens the psychological conflict between Juliette’s fear of herself and Warner’s determination to make Juliette into something useful to the Reestablishment.

Summary

Juliette wakes in pain and confusion, with Warner leaning over her. Memories of Jenkins return, and Juliette panics, screaming and trying to push Warner away. Warner, protected by gloves, remains calm and amused, saying he was worried when Juliette fainted.

Juliette realizes she is in Warner’s bedroom, a warm, luxurious room with an extra door and a lit candle. Warner offers Juliette bread, cheese, and water, but Juliette is unsettled by his apparent kindness after he forced Juliette to hurt Jenkins. Warner says Juliette likely fainted from overexertion and admits bringing Juliette to this point on her first day may have been a mistake.

Juliette confronts Warner, calling him a monster for imprisoning Juliette, threatening Juliette, allowing soldiers to beat Juliette, and using Juliette against Jenkins. Warner insists he is trying to help and says he cares about Juliette, but refuses to release Juliette because he needs Juliette.

When Juliette accuses Warner of needing Juliette only to kill people, Warner says he can kill perfectly well on his own. Warner reveals that fear and violence help Warner control soldiers and that Warner’s father allowed Warner to command an entire sector. Warner also challenges Juliette by asking why Juliette did not immediately break contact with Jenkins, implying Juliette felt some pull toward the power.

Juliette demands to know why Warner needs Juliette if Warner is already an effective killer, but Warner refuses to answer, saying Juliette will one day meet the reason. Warner orders Juliette to eat and sleep, says Juliette must stay in Warner’s room because Warner wants it that way, and refuses to make any promises of mercy. Warner blows out the candle and vanishes, leaving Juliette exhausted until Juliette collapses into sleep.
