Overview
Adam brings Juliette to his hidden home, revealing that his father is dead and that Adam has a younger brother named James. During the drive and after they arrive, Juliette wrestles with fear of Warner and the possibility that Warner may also be immune to her touch, though Juliette tries to dismiss it.
Adam reassures Juliette that she is not a monster and confesses he has loved Juliette for years, strengthening their bond. The chapter shifts the escape from flight alone to fragile refuge, while introducing Adam’s family responsibilities through James.
Summary
As Adam drives the stolen tank away from the irradiated field, Juliette is startled to learn he has a home of sorts. When Juliette begins to ask about Adam’s father, Adam says his father has been dead for some time, and the pain in Adam’s voice makes Juliette hold back further questions.
They travel without headlights through deserted land, avoiding notice from a nearby patrol tank. Juliette’s thoughts return to Warner: Warner wants Adam dead, wants Juliette alive, and would be even more dangerous if Warner knew he might have touched Juliette without being hurt. Juliette convinces herself she must have imagined it, because Adam’s immunity already seems impossible enough.
Adam takes Juliette’s hand, and the reality that Adam can touch Juliette overwhelms her. Juliette cries because Adam’s touch and care contradict years of rejection, even by Juliette’s mother. Adam pulls into an underground parking garage, stops the tank, and tells Juliette that it has always been the two of them against the world. Adam admits he loved Juliette long ago but never acted because he did not think he deserved her.
Adam insists Juliette is good and that Juliette’s hands have never hurt anyone on purpose. Remembering how Juliette endured cruelty at school without fighting back, Adam says Juliette will never become what Warner wants because Juliette still cares about the world. Adam and Juliette kiss intensely, deepening their romantic connection while they remain hidden in the dark tank.
A boy’s voice interrupts by calling Adam’s name. Adam rushes out and joyfully reunites with James, who is thrilled and surprised that Adam is home for good. Adam then brings Juliette out of the tank and introduces James as Adam’s brother, making the underground home and Adam’s private life suddenly real to Juliette.
