FORTY-FOUR

Overview

Juliette learns that Kenji has deliberately kept her ignorant about the refuge and about Castle, the person who now wants to meet her. Her distrust deepens when Winston refuses to let her see Adam or James and prioritizes Castle’s summons over Juliette’s need for answers and clothing.

The chapter also sharpens Juliette’s moral clarity: even while vulnerable and isolated, Juliette challenges Winston’s double standard about names and respect. This small confrontation shows Juliette beginning to assert herself in the new, uncertain environment.

Summary

Kenji tells Winston that Castle wants to meet Juliette immediately, but Winston objects because he has not finished examining her. Juliette asks who Castle is and realizes Kenji has told her almost nothing about the refuge. Winston is surprised by Kenji’s secrecy and calls Kenji out for not telling Juliette the truth.

Kenji admits he believed Juliette would never have come if she had known the truth, especially because she nearly killed Kenji during their escape. Juliette becomes more alarmed and demands answers, clothing, and access to Adam and James. Winston identifies himself after Juliette calls him “Blondie,” but says Adam is not ready to see her yet.

Juliette challenges Winston and Kenji’s refusal to let her see Adam or James, arguing that she cannot trust them if they withhold basic information and isolate her. Winston sends Kenji to find temporary clothes for Juliette, threatening to blame Kenji if Castle cannot meet her. Kenji leaves angrily.

After Kenji exits, Juliette asks Winston about the nickname “Moto.” Winston explains that it comes from Kenji’s last name, Kishimoto, and that Kenji dislikes the shortened version. Juliette points out Winston’s hypocrisy: he was offended by “Blondie,” yet dismisses Kenji’s right to be called by the name he prefers.
