Overview
Juliette finally sees Adam in Omega Point’s medical wing and learns that the resistance has healers whose abilities have restored him. Castle discovers that Adam can touch Juliette, making Adam’s immunity a major new clue in Omega Point’s research into people with powers.
The chapter deepens the mystery of Juliette’s condition by suggesting Adam may also be gifted, while showing Omega Point as a safe, functional community for James. Adam’s explanation of Warner’s motives reframes Warner’s obsession as a bid for control over superhuman abilities, and Juliette’s final warning keeps Warner’s threat alive.
Summary
Castle unlocks the medical wing and explains that it was kept closed because healing cannot be disturbed by emotional interruptions. He tells Juliette that Omega Point has twin healers: one addresses physical injuries, while the other helps with mental recovery. Castle then lets Juliette enter Adam’s room, assuring her that Adam can safely have visitors.
Juliette finds Adam asleep in a nearly empty medical ward and quietly takes his hand. Castle panics when he sees Juliette touching Adam, because he did not know Adam is immune to her lethal skin. Juliette explains that Adam can touch her and adds that Warner can, too. Castle is astonished and concludes that Adam’s immunity is unlikely to be coincidence.
Castle admits that Omega Point has researched people like Juliette for years and believes it may understand why their abilities exist. When Juliette asks whether Adam might also be like them, Castle says it is entirely possible. He leaves to report this discovery, but promises Juliette fuller answers if she decides to remain at Omega Point.
Adam wakes and is relieved to see Juliette. Sonya and Sara, the twin healers, arrive and explain that Adam is nearly ready to leave once his sedative wears off. They also reveal that James is safe and has been spending time with other children at Omega Point.
James visits, excited about the food, chocolate, other children, and classes awaiting him. After James leaves and the twins give Juliette and Adam privacy, Adam explains that he had heard rumors of Omega Point while in the army. He says he hoped the rumors were true after discovering Juliette’s abilities, while Kenji had secretly been working undercover to find her.
Adam tells Juliette that Warner wanted her because he found her before Castle did and hoped to exploit her abilities for his own power. Adam believes Warner wanted to manipulate gifted people into becoming a kind of weaponized force. Juliette then reveals her fear that Warner is not dead.
