Chapter 36
Overview
Lorenzo instructs Ace to accompany Keres, with Romeo, to find Theo and then take her to a grave in Jackson tied to her past. He admits he helped bury Keres’s mother, signaling remorse and a debt owed. Lorenzo promises Keres freedom after Theo is dealt with. Ace accepts, conflicted but loyal.
Summary
Ace meets Lorenzo in the library, uneasy about Keres leaving the Moretti mansion after two days of recovery. Lorenzo states Keres still needs to find Theo and assigns Ace and Romeo to go with her. Ace, usually informed, is unsettled by not knowing the full plan.
When Ace asks what happens afterward, Lorenzo gives him an address in Jackson, Michigan, instructing them to take Keres there first. He reveals that in a field behind that house is the lone headstone of Keres’s mother. Lorenzo confesses he was one of the men who buried her, showing rare remorse and acknowledging the family’s debt despite Keres taking Mia.
Lorenzo refuses to detail what happened to Keres’s mother, saying it is Keres’s story to tell. He declares that once Theo is found and eliminated, Keres is free to go. The promise reframes Keres’s standing with the Morettis and signals a path to closure.
Ace pockets the address and agrees to the mission, planning to return to the Morettis afterward, though he privately wonders if he and Romeo might follow Keres instead. Conflicted attraction and obligation pull at Ace, but he commits to escorting Keres and honoring Lorenzo’s orders.
