Prologue
Overview
In the aftermath of horrific abuse, eleven-year-old Keres and Phoenix are discovered hidden in a nailed-shut box in a van. A calm rescuer separates them from the scene, promises safety, and calls Keres a warrior. Keres chooses to trust him, marking the start of her recovery.
Summary
Keres, age eleven, lies cramped in a wooden box in a van, aching and terrified after severe abuse. Phoenix, an older girl beside her, trembles and chants in panic. When the van stops and male voices approach, Keres fears more harm and tries to make herself invisible.
The back doors open and men discover the nailed-shut box. Light and noise overwhelm Keres as Phoenix is lifted out, still chanting. Keres cannot intervene; her strength was spent resisting earlier. She curls deeper into the shadows, expecting only more violence.
One rescuer takes charge, asks for a coat, and covers Keres. He speaks gently, assures her the “monster” is gone, and promises safety and care. Keres, conflicted by past cruelty yet longing for safety, slowly responds, her instincts telling her to trust him.
The man offers to lift her without hurting her and validates her fear, telling her, “Warriors don’t escape fear, they conquer it.” This recognition gives Keres enough courage to accept help. She agrees to leave the box, choosing a fragile hope over despair, and her rescue begins.
