Chapter 39

Overview

On the road after visiting her mother’s grave, Keres suppresses grief to focus on finding Theo Wynn. At a motel, Ace tends her wound and taunts her vulnerabilities, escalating sexual tension. Romeo’s arrival shifts attention as Ace and Romeo have sex, affirming their bond. Keres, aching for connection yet believing it impossible, hardens her resolve to continue the mission.

Summary

Leaving the house in Jackson, Keres clings to Ace on the motorcycle and forces herself to prioritize the hunt for Theo Wynn over the turmoil stirred by discovering her mother’s grave. She steels herself, believing she can process her grief only after confronting Theo.

At a motel Romeo books, Ace and Keres are left alone in a single-bed room. Ace checks Keres’s stitched wrist, provoking both physical heat and emotional defensiveness. He insists he sees through her mask to a woman who wants care and love, which Keres rejects aloud even as the attraction between them flares into a near-encounter.

Romeo returns, and Ace immediately redirects his desire toward him. After a charged exchange, Ace orders Romeo to the shower, where they have sex. Keres, aroused and frustrated, listens from the bed, refusing to join despite wanting to.

Later, as Ace and Romeo settle into bed, they exchange tenderness and an “I love you,” exposing the depth of their bond. Watching them, Keres feels intense jealousy and longing for connection with them beyond sex, yet concludes there is no future like that for her. She turns away, clinging to the mission to find Theo as her only focus.
