Chapter 30
Overview
Lorenzo alerts Ace that Mia has been located in Toledo, forcing an immediate move. Ace and Romeo quietly abandon the motel—and Keres—at night to intercept and recover Mia, aiming to redeem their failures. Ace wrestles with conflicted feelings for Keres but prioritizes the mission.
Summary
In the pre-dawn darkness at a motel near Ann Arbor, Ace struggles with sleeplessness and his turbulent feelings for Keres, reminding himself she abducted his boss’s pregnant wife and endangered their crew. Romeo emerges from the bedroom, confirming their volatile entanglements remain messy.
Lorenzo calls Ace with an urgent update: Mia has been found in Toledo after a lead from Fort Wayne. Ace, who had given Lorenzo Theo Wynn’s name hours earlier, recognizes this as their chance at redemption and promises not to fail again.
Lorenzo orders immediate departure and instructs them to leave Keres behind, reasoning she lacks what she needs to find Theo and will return if she needs help. Ace and Romeo wordlessly agree, gear up, and slip out without waking Keres.
They push their bikes out of earshot, then speed onto the freeway toward Ohio. As they ride, Ace suppresses guilt over abandoning Keres, focusing instead on correcting their mistake by reaching Mia quickly and ensuring the safety of Lorenzo’s wife and child.
