Chapter 31

Overview

Keres wakes to a furious call from Father Mike, who reveals the Moretti sons were not part of her abduction and were involved in her rescue. He has warned Phoenix to flee and told Lorenzo where Mia is. Realizing Phoenix might kill Mia, Keres decides to intervene before Lorenzo arrives.

Summary

Keres awakens to repeated calls from Father Mike and senses trouble. On the phone, Father Mike scolds her for abducting Mia, revealing he knows Mia is Lorenzo Moretti’s wife. Keres insists the Morettis are complicit, but Father Mike challenges her assumptions.

Father Mike states that Salvatore Moretti was a monster, yet his sons were not involved in Keres’s abduction. He further claims Keres’s memory is hazy and that the men who got her out were the Moretti sons, not him. This revelation shakes Keres, who has long believed the family responsible.

Checking the room, Keres finds she is alone and panics. Father Mike admits he warned Phoenix to leave and told Lorenzo where Mia is, believing Lorenzo deserves to know if his family is safe. Keres realizes this could trigger violence.

Fearing Phoenix’s hatred of the Morettis, Keres believes Phoenix might kill Mia rather than surrender her. She resolves to move immediately to reach Phoenix and Mia before Lorenzo arrives, determined to prevent bloodshed and protect them both.
