Chapter 52
Overview
Pressed by Ace and Romeo to stop running, Keres confronts her fear of belonging. Their unwavering assurances crack her defenses until she admits she doesn’t want to run. Wandering their apartment, she recognizes signs of shared life and realizes this could be her home, signaling a shift toward commitment.
Summary
In bed between Ace and Romeo, Keres resists their proposal that she live with them. Romeo vows he would bring her back daily, and Ace insists she belongs with them. Their physical closeness and steady reassurances challenge Keres’s conviction that she belongs nowhere.
Ace demands eye contact and promises safety, acceptance, and unwavering support, while Romeo echoes the pledge. Overwhelmed, Keres finally admits she doesn’t want to run, releasing some of her fear. Ace tells her simply not to.
Later, Keres slips out of bed, puts on Romeo’s T-shirt, and quietly explores the apartment. She notices shared details—jackets by the door, their boots, a photo of Ace and Romeo with their bikes, and her helmet resting beside theirs—small signs of belonging that move her.
In the softly lit living room, Keres questions whether she can give up her solitude to live with them. The comfort of the space and the evidence of a shared life answer her unspoken question; she realizes there is only one answer, and it feels like home.
