Chapter 45
Overview
Romeo and Ace discover Theo Wynn dead and find Keres in a devastating breakdown. They clean and comfort Keres, helping her regain composure. The scene cements their support for Keres after her violent confrontation. Re-armored, Keres leads them to leave, signaling a shift from trauma to forward motion.
Summary
Romeo and Ace try to revive an unconscious bodyguard, but a noise draws them toward Theo Wynn’s office. With guns ready, they enter and find Theo disemboweled on the floor and Keres curled up nearby, keening with grief and shock. The sight freezes them before Ace finally moves to help.
Ace lifts Keres and carries her to a luxurious bathroom. While Romeo runs a bath, Ace gently narrates each step, removing Keres’s blood-soaked clothes and placing her in hot water. Keres remains silent, trembling and crying, while Ace methodically washes her, asking Romeo for a jug and rinsing her hair until the water runs clear.
They dry Keres and dress her in jeans and Romeo’s clean T-shirt. She continues to cry quietly, then asks for a moment alone. Outside the door, Romeo worries, and Ace suggests she is rebuilding her emotional armor after exposing her vulnerability.
When Keres emerges, her eyes are red but her demeanor is composed. Without discussing Theo’s death, they agree on urgency. Keres signals it is time to leave, her mask restored, and the trio prepares to exit the house together.
