Chapter 44

Overview

Keres, trapped with Theo Wynn, stops resisting to lure him into a mistake, then uses precision violence to choke and blind him, ultimately killing him. She locates the panic room release and triggers it before collapsing in grief. With Theo dead, Keres avenges past victims and shifts the power dynamic.

Summary

Locked in the panic room with Theo Wynn, Keres stops struggling to disarm him psychologically while she assesses an opening. As Theo loosens pressure to remove her jeans, Keres pivots, wraps her legs around his neck, and applies a crushing choke.

When Theo frees her wrists to pry her legs away, Keres gouges his eyes with her thumbs, blinding him as she maintains the choke. His airway collapses and he dies, his eyes dislodged. Keres retrieves her knife and, driven by fury and grief for countless victims, repeatedly stabs his face, neck, and chest.

After ensuring Theo is dead, Keres searches under the desk, finds the small black button he used, and presses it. Hearing steel groan, she understands the mechanism has shifted—likely unlocking the room. Overwhelmed, she curls into a ball and weeps, the catharsis of survival and vengeance overtaking her.
