Chapter Eight: The Powers of the Air

Overview

Gerhardt launches a live-capture raid while Leila Pervani deftly extracts key information from the wounded Bonneville about Lyra, Ionides, and the stolen alethiometer. Malcolm and Ionides locate Lyra, but police and Magisterial forces converge. Vast winged beings intervene, Ionides is captured, and Malcolm is carried into the sky as Lyra hears Pan above.

Summary

Father Gerhardt mobilizes a Magisterial Guard van, ordering his men to take targets alive. After he departs, Dr. Leila Pervani visits the injured Olivier Bonneville and, while soothing his pride, draws out intelligence: Abdel Ionides had trailed him in the desert, Lyra has his father’s alethiometer, and Ionides needs Lyra for a step toward an eastern “treasure.”

Meanwhile, Ionides leads Malcolm into the Brazilian Embassy garden and points out a sleeping Lyra. Malcolm gently wakes her, noting her exhaustion and broken fingers. As sirens close in from multiple directions, they prepare to flee toward a locked secondary gate.

Two vehicles arrive—one Magisterial, one Polis—spilling armed men who form a firing line. Strange, vast shadows race overhead, disrupting the attackers. Gunfire erupts; soldiers panic as something colossal beats the air above. A gray-faced cleric (Father Gerhardt) oversees Ionides’s seizure; Malcolm strikes a soldier but cannot break Ionides free.

A soldier fires skyward and is snatched and dropped by a gigantic winged creature. Amid the chaos, Lyra hears and calls to a beloved voice, Pantalaimon, overhead. As Malcolm moves to aid Ionides, an immense winged being seizes Malcolm and carries him high above the city. Asta remains with Lyra as instructed, while Ionides is dragged toward the van.

In the tumult, Malcolm realizes the beings are akin to the powerful entities he and Lyra have encountered before—forces beyond human scale—and holds to the thought that both he and Lyra have survived such encounters in the past.
