Chapter Nineteen: Arctic Healing
Overview
Tilda Vasara heals Malcolm with bloodmoss and advances a witches–gryphon alliance as the Magisterium moves east toward Lop Nor. Pantalaimon learns of Serafina Pekkala’s death, receives a protective token, and departs with Tilda for Tashbulak. At sea, Lyra debates an angel about imagination, resolves to seek a rose-world opening, and is forced back to Baku by the storm.
Summary
Tilda Vasara visits Malcolm and performs a brutal but effective surgery to remove the bullet from his hip, cauterizing and packing the wound with bloodmoss. She explains its healing properties and brews an infusion for Malcolm. Between treatments, Tilda reports progress toward a witches–gryphon alliance and rumors of Magisterium troop movements east toward a desert with a moving lake, which Malcolm identifies as Lop Nor.
They discuss the Magisterium’s ground explosions in wild places and plan to consult Queen Shahrnavāz at sunrise. After Malcolm sleeps, Pantalaimon speaks with Tilda, learning that Serafina Pekkala was killed by a missionary. They reflect on Lyra’s and Malcolm’s restrained feelings. Tilda gives Pan a yellow flower charm for calling aid.
Spurred by the gift, Pan asks Tilda to fly him to Tashbulak and then the red building, hoping to find Lyra or her goal. He leaves a note for Malcolm and departs with Tilda into the storm.
Meanwhile, Lyra battles a violent storm aboard the Transcaspian ferry. On deck, she encounters a benevolent, unseen angel who claims to know of Xaphania. The angel reduces imagination to mere invention; Lyra challenges this, arguing for dreams’ emotional truth and the value of art and story beyond facts.
Lyra declares her intent to seek an opening near the rose-oil source in Karamakan and to keep such windows open if they help truth to be seen, despite the angel’s sorrow and warnings. The presence vanishes, and as Lyra sleeps, the captain announces the ferry is turning back to Baku due to worsening conditions.
