Chapter Twenty-Seven: The Bijou of Atlas

Overview

Dilyara confronts Chen’s scheme to sell the desert station, exposing tracks from armed raiders that likely will return, forcing Chen to flee. In flight to Karamakan, Lyra and Malcolm learn the Magisterium can bomb interworld openings and weigh Mustafa Bey’s murder and corporate motives. Pan and Tilda fly by night toward the roses; Bonneville, captive to Delamare, bides his time. Far away, Farder Coram contemplates the moon, a quiet counterpoint to looming conflict.

Summary

At dawn in the desert station, Dilyara tells Brynmor Strauss about a night visit by men in a truck. Chen arrives in fine clothes, orders Dilyara to clean for “rich merchants,” and, seeing Strauss, tries to push him out with offers of camels and a referral to Jamila at the green door. Dilyara challenges him, and Strauss identifies clear evidence of three armed intruders—prints and tire tracks—arguing they are mountain raiders who will return to destroy the place, not buyers. Panicked, Chen bolts toward the village.

Meanwhile, Lyra and Malcolm ride the inexperienced gryphon Gulya over the sea toward Karamakan. They discuss reports from witches that the Magisterium has a bomb that can destroy interworld openings, likely targeting the rose portal. Malcolm reassures Lyra he will repair the alethiometer’s mechanism and reveals the circlet is forged from its case; Lyra wrestles with uncertainty about returning and reflects on her closeness to Malcolm. They revisit Mustafa Bey’s aid and murder, and Malcolm raises Thuringia Potash as a ruthless, motive-obscuring actor.

Elsewhere, Pan travels with the witch Tilda Vasara. At dusk they eat and prepare for a long night flight, speaking of star navigation, Tilda’s centuries of life, her past interest in the remarkable boy Malcolm, and lethal mountain birds. Tilda recounts her sister’s visits to worlds of absolute hatred and absolute love—both rejected—and they launch into the night.

In captivity, Olivier Bonneville endures a hot, airless cell, calculating that Delamare needs him and will not trust Lacroix with the alethiometer. He concludes Delamare aims for the desert building where the roses originate, and resolves to think on their own escape.

Far away on the English fens, Farder Coram and his niece Rosella share chocolatl under the bright moon, musing on fear, imperfection, and a tale of sun and shadow, a calm interlude before the gathering storm.
