Chapter Six: Eagle Works Terrier 1500
Overview
Malcolm discovers Thuringia Potash’s Aleppo facility has abruptly shut after a failed biosynthesis effort, and learns of a confidential new project far to the east. In Aleppo, Lyra survives a violent assault by Olivier Bonneville. In Britain, Brytsec’s ORD targets Alice with insinuations about Malcolm and Lyra, but Alice escapes dramatically.
These events expose widening threats—corporate, criminal, and state—and redirect the search toward a secret eastern project while forcing key characters into flight.
Summary
At dawn on Aleppo’s western outskirts, Timur Ghazarian drops Malcolm, who adopts the alias George Hanson of Coventry Hydraulics. They spot a shuttered Thuringia Potash site: dry planters and locked gates suggest a sudden closure. In a nearby café, the owner says TP abruptly ended operations two weeks earlier after a costly biosynthesis project failed.
Outside, Malcolm meets Nassim, TP’s former chief accountant, who confirms overspending and hints at a new, very confidential project much further east, offering no names or details. Malcolm and Ghazarian depart with this lead.
Meanwhile, in the Brazilian Embassy garden, an exhausted Lyra drifts into a dream of Pan before waking to Olivier Bonneville attacking her and demanding the alethiometer. Lyra fights savagely, injures Bonneville and his hawk dæmon, and forces him to flee, though she is shaken and in pain.
Before dawn in Britain, Alice Lonsdale is taken from a derelict barracks to a BRYTSEC/ORD office to meet Inspector Mackenzie. He insinuates sexual misconduct between Malcolm and Lyra and claims Pauline Simms is pregnant by Malcolm. Alice rejects the allegations, refuses to incriminate anyone, and watches for an opening.
When Mackenzie’s cat dæmon provokes Ben, Alice flips the desk onto the inspector, bolts from the unlocked building, and commandeers an Eagle Works Terrier 1500 pickup. She rams a gate and speeds into the woods, escaping Brytsec custody.
